For years, Nike has taken action towards spearheading sustainability practices in the fashion industry, recently releasing an open-source, circular design guide highlighting ten sustainable design principles and encouraging industry-wide collaboration.
Circularity includes designing and distributing products whose life cycle extends beyond a single use and can be repurposed in a number of ways. The new design guide is aimed to help industry leaders reach greater sustainability goals by formalizing best circular design practices in a way that’s never been done before, calling for industry-wide improvement through engagement and open dialogue towards optimal solutions. The comprehensive guideline sheds light on various elements of circular design including product versatility, disassembly, and green chemistry; while also presenting case studies and thought-provoking questions centered on recyclability and further industry responsibility.
The circular design guideline is accessible to all, encouraging a shift in both design strategy and conscious consumer action. As the effects of climate change become increasingly more apparent, we must strive towards greater sustainability efforts.
