The last Thursday in November has long marked a day of Thanksgiving in the United States, however the widely celebrated holiday is often overlooked by its true roots. In order to understand the history of Thanksgiving, it’s essential to pay homage to those who were here long before the settlers and gain a greater understanding of issues faced by Indigenous peoples.

Native communities are vast and diverse, with tribes across the country full of dynamic culture. Unfortunately, these groups continue to experience high rates of poverty and fight for their inherent rights to control their land and access natural resources.

And while thankfulness and gratitude are at the forefront of our lives every day, let’s use today to advance the rights and awareness of Indigenous peoples and communities. Below are ten Native non-profit organizations advocating for new frameworks in law, policy, and tribal programs that promote the well-being of Indigenous peoples.
