Celebrating Pride Month

Allyship and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

June is Pride Month, a celebration aimed to uplift and amplify LGBTQ+ voices, experiences, and rights. The Stonewall Riots of 1969 sparked the beginning of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, when individuals at The Stonewall Inn bar began to riot against unreasonable police discrimination. Since then, there has been slow but steady acknowledgement of LGBTQ+ rights, with more individuals and brands recognizing the importance of spotlighting this diverse community. And while rainbow branding and pride-themed merchandise show solidarity during Pride Month, there are other tangible forms of allyship in support the LGBTQ+ community.

Donating to organizations and local spaces centered on LGBTQ+ needs are one of the prime ways to support, as LGBTQ+ youth face higher risks of job discrimination, homelessness, and suicide. Furthermore, using your vote to elect candidates that will progress LGBTQ+ legislation by recognizing and prioritizing the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and communities is also vitally important.

Last but not least, listening is key to LGBTQ+ allyship. There are many social constructions that make it challenging for those in the LGBTQ+ community to express their authentic selves and, in order to be an ally, it’s important to understand how gender identity and sexuality exist in relation to social, economic, and political issues. It’s essential for us to confront our own bias and actively refute misrepresentations of the LGBTQ+ community, using our voice as a vehicle to uplift those who face prejudice and discrimination. During Pride Month, we remain focused on continued LGBTQ+ advocacy, education, and representation.
