One year later and the fight for justice for Breonna Taylor continues. On the evening of March 13, 2020, Breonna Taylor was shot multiple times in her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky. She was not the target of the raid and no drugs nor the warranted suspect were found in her home.
Though the Louisville Police Department have terminated the three officers in connection to the raid, there have been no criminal charges associated with Taylor’s death. The grand jury announced criminal counts of wanton endangerment to Hankison, due to shooting into a neighboring residence, and did not charge other officers Mattingly and Cosgrove, who fired over 20 combined rounds into Taylor’s apartment. The city of Louisville announced a $12 million settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit, however the blatant disregard of accountability and justice spotlights existing systemic racism, erroneous policing relations, and a necessary demand for change.
Justice remains to be served for beloved EMT, daughter, and friend Breonna Taylor. As a way to honor and respect her life on the one year anniversary of her death, we must continue to take action and demand accountability. Black lives, and specifically Black women’s lives, are valued. Continue the fight for justice by taking action and making calls to demand the officers involved in Taylor’s death are charged and convicted.
Let them know, Breonna Taylor’s life mattered.
